Straight answers to the questions importers ask us most.
At minimum: a commercial invoice, packing list, and bill of lading (ocean) or air waybill (air). Depending on your goods, you may also need PGA documents (e.g., FDA prior notice for food products), certificates of origin, or a power of attorney authorizing us to act as your broker.
The Importer Security Filing ("10+2") must be filed at least 24 hours before your cargo is laden aboard the vessel at the foreign port. Late or missing ISF filings can trigger penalties of up to $5,000 per violation — so send us your shipping details as early as possible.
When documents are complete and no exam is ordered, most ocean shipments clear within 1–3 business days of arrival. CBP exams, PGA holds, or missing paperwork can extend that — we'll keep you posted at every step.
A customs bond is a financial guarantee to CBP that duties, taxes, and fees will be paid. Nearly every commercial import needs one. A single-entry bond covers one shipment; a continuous bond covers all your shipments for a year and is usually cheaper if you import regularly. We can arrange either for you.
Duties depend on three things: your product's HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) classification, its customs value, and its country of origin. Rates range from duty-free to 25%+ for some goods. Correct classification is critical — we review it with you before filing.
U.S. law doesn't require every importer to use one, but entries must be filed correctly in CBP's ACE system, and mistakes cause delays, exams, and penalties. A broker handles the filing, duty calculation, PGA requirements, and problem-solving — for most importers it's the safest and simplest path.
Our fees depend on the shipment — entry type, number of line items, PGA requirements, and port. Request a quote with your cargo details and we'll respond with clear, upfront pricing. No hidden charges.
